Health and safety legislation is extensive to say the least with Acts of Parliament going back to the 1900's that still have relevance today. Most of today's regulations are based on the risk assessment regime introduced as a result of European Directives. In addition to the general responsibility for risk assessments there are a number of regulations that direct the requirement for risk assessment at key aspects of most businesses, typical examples being The Manual Handling regulations and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations.

The rate of introduction of new regulation has slowed in recent years and we are currently in a period of consolidation, a time for employer's to ensure that they have taken the required actions by the appropriate regulation. It is a time consuming exercise for any one company to look through the records of legislation so as to decide if they apply to your company. It is also quite difficult to keep abreast of upcoming legislation to ensure future compliance.
